Spanish and Mediterranean cooking

Lunch and dinner in Málaga’s old town.

Taberna Picas Málaga is an Andalusian taberna for a sit-down lunch or dinner: a bar and a dining room in a passage off Plaza de la Merced, open every day. The cooking is Spanish and Mediterranean, the menu is the same as on the square, and alongside there’s a well-poured caña, a vermouth from Málaga or a glass of wine.

Comparing restaurants in Málaga for tonight? This is everyday Spanish food in Málaga, priced dish by dish. The kitchen serves lunch from 13:30 to 16:00 and dinner from 19:30 to midnight, so dinner at eleven is no problem.

What it costs

Full menu with prices

A selection for lunch and dinner, with today’s prices. A ración is a full plate to share; a media ración is half of one.

The fried fish comes in nine kinds, boquerones (fresh anchovies) among them: read more about pescaíto frito in Málaga. The seafood paella is €19; the menu doesn’t say whether that’s per dish or per person, so ask your waiter.

The room

The room and the passage of murals.

You reach the Taberna through Pasaje Campos, a passage lined with tile panels of Spanish masters, with a row of tables in front of them. The door is easy to spot: tile panels with the Picas logo above it and two barrels on the steps.

Inside there’s a bar topped with bronze-coloured mosaic, walls of dark stone, wooden tables and glasses hanging over the bar. The story behind each panel is in the gallery of murals.

Restaurants in Málaga

Looking for the best restaurants in Málaga?

We run one, so we won’t rank our neighbours. If you’re deciding where to eat in Málaga, what we can give you is checkable: our prices dish by dish, our opening hours and how to find the door.

Before you come

Quick questions.

Is the Taberna a tapas bar or a restaurant?

Both. Taberna Picas Málaga is a sit-down restaurant in Málaga’s old town that also serves tapas, at €6.50 or €7 each. If tapas are what you’re after, our bar on the square has a website of its own: tapas in Málaga.

What time do people eat dinner in Málaga?

Later than in most of Europe: lunch is usually between 13:00 and 16:00 and dinner between 20:00 and 23:30, so 21:00 is a normal time to sit down. At the Taberna the kitchen is open from 13:30 to 16:00 and from 19:30 to midnight.

Is it the same menu as on the square?

Yes. The three Picas venues share one menu, so everything on the full menu can be ordered at the Taberna whenever the kitchen is open.
